Washington DC - We deserve a government that works for the people. And we need a bipartisan solution that prioritizes what people need— not political agendas—to fund the government.

This government shutdown has serious consequences for millions of people across the country. Countless programs will be disrupted, creating hardship for families, children, workers, and communities. Essential programs, including housing, education, food, and public health services, will be cut. Three-quarters of a million federal jobs across the country are in jeopardy; 85 percent of federal employees work throughout the states, not in Washington, D.C.

The effects of this shutdown ripple across the country, affecting local economies, straining social services, and threatening the stability of families who depend on government programs and services. People, especially women and people of color, are already struggling, and this shutdown only brings more uncertainty and disruption, with immediate and severe consequences for many.

Small businesses that rely on federal employees or government-driven tourism and commerce will also feel the impact, as closures of museums, national parks, and other federal facilities reduce customer traffic and revenue.

We are deeply troubled by the human and economic toll this government shutdown imposes, especially as we face a rising cost of living and now an unemployment rate ticking up. Congress needs to find a bipartisan solution that protects access to healthcare and keeps our government functioning for all of us, prioritizing people, not politics.

Congress should be working to prevent further crises and ensure that the government remains open and functional for everyone. Every family, worker, and community deserves the security of knowing that federal services will continue without interruption. Let’s not let this shutdown linger; get the government up and running for all of us!
