Why We’re Still Fighting for the Equal Rights Amendment

In the current socio-political landscape, advocating for gender equality remains a critical issue. One significant yet unfinished battle in this area is the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). Originally proposed in 1923 and passed by Congress in 1972, the ERA aims to ensure that rights under the law are not denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex. While the ERA primarily focuses on guaranteeing women's rights, it holds profound implications for all genders, including men. This blog post explores why young men in the US should pay attention to and advocate for the ERA.
The ERA seeks to guarantee equal legal rights for everyone in the United States regardless of sex. Despite its straightforward goal, the amendment has faced significant hurdles, and while it has been ratified by the necessary 38 of 50 States, it remains unpublished in the Constitution.
Promoting a Fairer Society
Equality benefits everyone. The ERA promotes a society where individuals are judged by their abilities and character rather than their gender. By advocating for the ERA, young men contribute to a more equitable and just society, which ultimately fosters a healthier and more inclusive environment for all.
Breaking Stereotypes and Expanding Opportunities
Traditional gender roles can be limiting for both women and men. The ERA encourages the dismantling of these stereotypes, allowing men to pursue roles and careers traditionally dominated by women without facing societal backlash. This leads to broader career opportunities and the freedom to express themselves without the constraints of outdated gender norms.
Educate Themselves and Others
Understanding the history and implications of the ERA is crucial. Young men should educate themselves about the amendment and its benefits and share this knowledge with peers to raise awareness.
Engage in Advocacy
Joining or supporting organizations that advocate for the ERA can amplify their efforts. Participation in rallies, signing petitions, and contacting legislators are effective ways to push for the amendment's ratification.
Promote Gender Equality and Equity in Daily Life
Advocacy starts at home. Young men can promote gender equality in their personal and professional lives by challenging sexist attitudes and practices, supporting female colleagues, and advocating for policies that promote equality and equity.
Use Social Media Platforms
Leveraging social media to spread information and rally support for the ERA can reach a broad audience. Young men can use their platforms to share stories, highlight the importance of the ERA, and encourage others to join the movement.
