Washington, DC –– Following the swearing in of Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court, ERA Coalition / Fund for Women’s Equality President and CEO Zakiya Thomas released the following statement:
“For the first time in history, a Black woman now sits on the Supreme Court. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson’s swearing in today is a moment to celebrate, and a reminder that we still have much work to do before we achieve true equality in this country. Though we have significantly shaped American democracy, Black women’s voices have been missing for 233 years in an institution whose decisions, as we’ve seen in recent days, radically impact our lives. Justice Jackson's legal acumen, brilliance, and compassion are exactly what we need on the Supreme Court. We’re grateful to have her voice and insight in interpreting the nation’s governing documents for years to come.
“We also want to thank Justice Stephen Breyer for his service and for the legacy he leaves behind. Justice Breyer has been a true champion for equality, and he will be missed.”

The ERA Coalition was founded in 2014 to bring concerted, organized action to the effort to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. The ERA Coalition has a sister organization, the Fund for Women’s Equality, which promotes public education and outreach on the need for constitutional equality. Composed of more than 260 organizations across the country, the Coalition provides education and advocacy on constitutional Equality.
While the effort to amend the constitution to include sex equality began nearly a century ago, our renewed efforts are centered on women of color (African American, Asian American/Pacific Islander, Latina, and Native American), gender-nonconforming and transgender women and girls, and nonbinary people – those who are most impacted by systemic inequities.
