Washington, DC –– Following the news that the House Oversight and Reform Committee, led by Chairwoman Carol Maloney, will hold a hearing on the Equal Rights Amendment on October 21, from 10 AM – 2:30 PM ET, ERA Coalition and Fund for Women’s Equality President and CEO Carol Jenkins issued the following statement:

“We applaud Chairwoman Maloney’s tireless commitment to adding the Equal Rights Amendment and using her platform to draw attention to the urgency of writing equal rights into the very framework of our government. As politicians ramp up efforts to roll back women’s rights across the country, there’s never been a more crucial time to put people of all genders on equal footing in our nation’s legal system. The House of Representatives has passed the time limit removal twice already. It’s long past time for the Senate to follow suit and do the same. There is no time limit on equality.”

Jenkins will testify at the hearing alongside ERA Coalition / Fund for Women’s Equality Board members Bamby Salcedo, a Mexican-American transgender woman, activist, and founder of the Los Angeles-based TransLatin@ Coalition, and Alyssa Milano, actress, ERA advocate, writer, and producer. ERA Coalition friend Victoria Nourse, one of the nation’s leading scholars on statutory interpretation, Congress, and the separation of powers who played a crucial role in drafting the original Violence Against Women Act, will also make remarks during the hearing.

The ERA Coalition / Fund for Women’s Equality will host a press conference with members of Congress on Capitol Hill prior to the start of the hearing, beginning at 9:00 AM ET.

During the hearing, the ERA Coalition / Fund for Women’s Equality will host a live watch party for ERA advocates to support Chairwoman Maloney and the House Oversight Committee’s important work. Both the hearing and the press conference will be streamed to the ERA Coalition Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/ERAcoalition beginning at 9 a.m. ET. Viewers can use the hashtag #RiseUp4ERA on social media when talking about this event.
