22222222ERA Coalition/FFWE Statement in Solidarity with the Asian American Community

The ERA Coalition/Fund for Women’s Equality strongly condemns the anti-Asian and anti-woman violence that took place in Atlanta last week. We send our deepest condolences to the families grieving, the Atlanta community and our beloved Asian communities everywhere. We stand with you against this hatred.

We want to be clear that this type of violence and racism goes against the very tenants of our mission to ensure that the 28^th Amendment (ERA) is part of the U.S. Constitution.

Unfortunately, built into our country’s founding, legislated for centuries is the inherent anti-woman bias and anti-Asian racism. Women, especially women of color, are the main targets of violence when it comes to the systemic misogyny that pervades our society. Anti-Asian hate has spiked since the COVID-19 pandemic began, and racist rhetoric around the virus has only continued to fuel this hatred toward Asian-Americans and Asian women.

We must codify the Equal Rights Amendment and add it to the Constitution so we can protect women from the targeted, systemic violence we face.
